ADVOCATE FOR THOSE IN NEED
Stories
Mark came seeking help from Harvest in a desperate situation, because he did not know where else to turn. He was facing eviction and at the end of his rope. Through referral and intervention, Mark was able to find the help that he needed to get back on his feet. He now utilizes both the Cost Share Grocery Program and LIFE Program-regularly attending classes and utilizing the computer lab. He literally looks like a different person and his renewed self esteem comes across in the way he now presents himself.
This family came to Harvest in need of Community Resources for their youngest child and childcare referrals for both of their children. Their hope as a family is “to be successful for our children”. The family enrolled in the Cost Share Grocery Program and LIFE Programs. They’ve also r received referrals for community resources and permanent housing.
Marc was referred to HFOC by his mobile home park. His computer and job skills were limited and he was struggling to find assistance applying for food stamps and had little food in his pantry. He began working with the Case Worker and attended one of the life skills classes provided by the University of Florida’s St. Lucie Extension Program. The first class that he attended was on energy conservation. He said that learning about the “curvy light bulbs” that have now saved him money got him hooked. He realized that there were ways that he could budget his money to improve the quality of his life. He has attended 30 classes and groups over the past 60 days and says that he has found in Harvest Food & Outreach Center both new skills and camaraderie.
